I especially like this paragraph.
“We want to try to get starters in every round. That’s the goal. I firmly believe that is what we have to shoot for. You have to out-scout people. You have to out-work people. You have to watch more tape than the next guy. Each scout has to know his territory better than the next person. You have to have an eye for talent. You have to also know if a player is talented and if he will fit in the vision we have and the direction we’re going to go.”
This is in stark contrast to Polian who I sometimes felt made excuses because of where we were picking or how this draft was weak on talent. The jury will be out on Grigson, but he seems like a work-aholic which I really like.

like a very bright guy but he is very much an unknown quantity. We will have to see how much talent he can bring in over the next few years. The Luck pick will help him a lot.
Although it is really important people always overate the draft. Teams are lucky if they can get a few solid starters from each draft. Most of the players drafted, especially after the first few rounds, don’t last that long in the league.

Has to nail the #1 this year
I like what I ’m an hearing from Grigson. Seems likes he has clear goals and visions and is willing to put in the work to make it happen. However, they have to get this Peyton/Luck/RG3 situation right or it could set the team back years on and off the field.
I especially like this line – “Once you lose sight of fundamentals no matter how talented the player is, he’s going to have problems.”
This tells me two things -
1) Plain and simple – Can the guy play or not? They will look past combine numbers and 1 year flashes in college. May not always go for the flashy, popular choices but will look for solid, smart football players.
2) They will place a premium on character. As a fan, I am proud that you don’t see Colts players on the police blotter or on TMZ as much you see other with other teams.

He may be large and athletic, but the NFL is at least 80% mental. Poe should have been a terror in Conference-USA with his size and athleticism. Instead he just didn’t produce. That doesn’t bode well for the NFL.
Bill Walsh built a dynasty in San Francisco by drafting smart players who produced consistently in college. That’s not Poe.

It’s not intelligence per say, it’s football IQ, consistent production, and most importantly, drive.
Tony Ugoh had all the physical tools to be a great left tackle in the NFL. But he wasn’t a solid, smart football player in college and didn’t magically become one in the pros.
Poe will bust. The Colts are better off without him.

You know who is a great example of that?
Jason Smith of the St. Louis Rams. He had perfect measurements and was outstanding at the combine. He worked his way in to the #2 pick overall. However, he was not that great in college and is more or less a bust in the pros.

'I Want The Best Scrape'
As far as Colt GM’s go, the greatest was Joe Thomas ( 1972-1975 ). For the short time he was there, he got rid of all the deadwood, got draft choices for most of them, and did a great job in the draft. He was a ruthless, tactless s.o.b., but he wanted to prove his superiority every day, and always ‘get the best scrape’ at the bottom of the barrel when drafting or in free agency.
I hope Grigson is ruthless as well, but not a ‘tactless s.o.b.’ Turn over every stone. Most importantly, have an ambitious plan for rebuilding the team. It’s going to take four years to do the job properly, emphasizing linemen and cornerbacks when you are picking early.
I don’t want them to build a competitive team; I want a dynasty. Go Grigson!

like something I’ve said. Every draft pick should be made with the intent or thought that draft pick will be starting. Man, I’m loving the Grigs pick, I still think he needs to put a front office together if he hasn’t done so yet!!!!!!
