While the entire city of Indianapolis is winning over skeptics who doubted the town could effectively host a Super Bowl (eat it Adrian Wojnarowski), the Colts made a curious collection of coaching hires and terminations.
The first move was the official hiring of Bruce Arians as offensive coordinator. Arians was seemingly not liked by the Rooney Family in Pittsburgh, and against the wishes of their star quarterback, they fired allowed Arians to "retire." The retirement stuff was, of course, a load of bull. For me, it seemed as though Arians didn't want to go out into a coaching market where there were limited options. Thus, "retirement." Then, the Colts job opened up. Arians has stated previously that one of the best jobs he ever had in the NFL was QB coach for the Colts from 1998-2000. He loves the organization, the owner, and the city of Indianapolis. Seems like a natural fit.
The odd part of hiring Arians is that the Colts hadn't yet fired last year's offensive coordinator, Clyde Christensen. So, when the news broke that the Colts had offered Arians the job, many of us wondered, "What's Clyde's status?" He hadn't been fired, and accepting a demotion to a position coach is incredibly demeaning. Yes, it is. Don't fool or kid yourself. Last year he was in charge of the offense, and he apparently did not do a very effective job. If he had, he'd still be running the offense. Rather than fire Christensen and let him rebuild his resume somewhere else, the Colts have opted to retain him as the quarterbacks coach.
From 2002-2009, Christensen was the wide receiver coach in Indianapolis.

Fair or unfair, this does not speak well for Christensen. Did no one else want to hire him as a coordinator or position coach? Not even the college ranks wanted to touch him? What's interesting here is that at least one team, the Bears, was sniffing around Christensen to gauge his interest in being their QB coach. Despite this interest, he is staying in Indianapolis, accepting the demotion along with the likelihood that no NFL team will ever offer him a coordinator job again.
Christensen was fired as OC in Tampa Bay in 2001 for running a piss poor offense, and he has now been stripped of coordinator duties yet again in Indianapolis.
It will be interesting to see if Christensen's presence makes things awkward for Arians. Some legacy players might still be loyal to Christensen. Will those players buy into Arians' philosophy?
I ask these sorts of questions not because I have anything against Christensen personally, though I'm sure more than a few idiots out there will think I am TEH HATERZ towards him. I'm met and interviewed him before, and he comes across as a friendly and personable man. At the Super Bowl two years ago, he saw me waiting to talk to him at a media roundtable. However, the session ended before I could ask any questions, and the Super Bowl 'handlers' were pushing us all out the door. Clyde came up to me and said, 'Did you still want to talk? We can chat outside.' We walked outside near the beach and chatted for 20 minutes about wide receiver routes, coaching under Tony Dungy, and offense in general. Nice guy.
Personally, I think it would have been smarter for his career to leave Indy. The hiring of Arians was, on some level, an indictment of Christensen as a coordinator. By agreeing to work for Arians, Christensen is admitting Arians is more qualified for the job of OC in Indy. If I were Christensen, I'd find that beneath me, and I'd move on to a place that acknowledges my skills as a coach. Taking the demotion only acknowledges that you lack the skills to effectively coordinate an offense.
Also, the Colts have hired Harold Goodwin to be the team's new offensive line coach. Goodwin, like Arians, spent five years as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh.
The Colts terminated the contracts of longtime tight ends coach Ricky Thomas and assistant offensive line coach Ron Prince.

Not sure what to think about Harold Goodwin as O-line coach
Never really protected Big Ben very well.

Hard to protect a QB
who holds on to the ball in the pocket for 5 minutes. Someone’s gonna end up free eventually.
coltsfan723 - February 1, 2012
Holds onto it because of Arian's offense
Still don’t like the hire

Any word on if Butler as a DC for the Colts is dead? Any clue on who Colts are looking at for the DC?
ItsALLgood - February 1, 2012
Butler
declined an interview with the Colts. He met with Coach Tomlin and the GM and got more money. Therefore Colts job wasn’t as appealing.

Clyde stays in Indy cause Peyton..
The have plans with Peyton at least 2 years(transition) ..
Combo: Clyde(PM OC) + Peyton + Luck + Arians(PM QB Coach) = 2 years for Manning + Luck Ready to Rocks the NFL.
Amilcar - February 1, 2012
Clyde stays because he is a good assistant coach
Ty46 - February 1, 2012
I don’t buy that either
And I don’t see Manning staying either why stay for a rebuilding project when he has very little time to win another ring.

The people used to said the same thing when Dungys gone..( aka SB run 2009 )
Remember
Garcon 3rd division..
Collie imported from a Mission in Argentina..
New Staff..& Bad Coaches..
Never say never…

Okay, Justin Bieber.

Except we lost that SB and really I didn’t think Dungy was much of a loss I was hoping he would retire after we won the SB
CF4L - February 1, 2012
dungy was not a huge loss at all

I’m not in 100% agreement with all you’ve said, but the basic idea is my opinion. Clyde sticks around until the decision on Peyton is final.

NFL
is a good gig for a coach. I think the vast majority are happy to just have jobs in the NFL, even if it is a QB coach. Kind of like movie actors, they take advantage of the good times and try to do whatever they can in the lean times.
GrizzColt - February 1, 2012
agree.
or he could just enjoy being in a bit role here and there. the pressure of being the leading man may have been too much for clyde and he’s simply more comfortable coaching a position.
you dont have to be on the tip top to be successful

I like the hire...
If I’m Clyde, I don’t see anything wrong with taking a demotion because it means he still has a job and is able to put food on the table. Also, like Caldwell, he appears to be a good assisant coach as someone else on here mentioned, he’s just not good at calling plays (my opinion). If the man had an ego and wasn’t able to swallow his pride and take the demotion with class then yea he should have asked to leave. I don’t see this as an awkward situation for him either. He can coexist with Arians unless again he has too much of an ego. From the way you personally describe him, he doesn’t seem to have this problem. ALso, the loyalty problem with legacy players is non existent because he is still part of the team. He was only a OC. I think if he had HC status leading the team then player loyalty would become an issue. It is a bit embarrassing to take a demotion but by no means does it mean he is an incapable coach all together.
The only reason some people might think it would be better for him to leave because of the new regime, new direction motto. New GM, New HC, New OC, New DC (in time). Like why carry over someone from the old staff that as a whole wasn’t cuttin it. At least thats the only reason I can see. Besides, as you noted, the market wasn’t interested in him for the time being, so why not stay and do what you love to do – Coach.
I don’t like this Hunter Goodwin Hire. Didn’t he play for the Vikings back in the day? His resume seems incomplete. This doesn’t validate the Metzellars firing for me because I don’t see the upgrade. But what do I know, I’m just a fan.
JohnHandburgers - February 1, 2012
My mistake... HAROLD Goodwin... Still, same yuk feeeling about it...
JohnHandburgers - February 1, 2012
Apparently
Apparently Christensen didn’t seem to mind staying in Indy as a coach as much as it bugs you. You call it a demotion and it is for sure big time but he still has a job rather then leave and go into the unknown. I must admit I have never heard of Harold Goodwin but I guess he must be OK for Pagano to hire him….now that Thomas and Prince are gone as well ….Christensen is the only guy that survived the blow up of the Colts…I wonder why we have not heard another word about who the Colts might be interested in as D coordinator now that Butler blew them off…..I liked that guy.
Colts53 - February 1, 2012
Makes sense for Christensen
I don’t see the demotion as being that big of a deal. With a new head coach, you expect him to bring in his own coordinators. It’s not like keeping Caldwell around as an OC or if Caldwell had hired another OC and asked Clyde to take a demotion. And Clyde clearly was not going to get another OC spot anytime soon. If he’s going to be a position coach somewhere, may as well stay where your family has put down some roots. Plus the chance to be a position coach for either Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck seems like a pretty good opportunity to enhance his resume and get considered for future promotions.
As for Goodwin, it is worth noting that he was working with our new OC. Arians must have been pretty impressed by him.

Maybe he likes
The team, city, his house, neighborhood, etc. tons of reasons to stay. Not everyone has to be in charge to fell like they enjoy their work.

Awkward for Arians?
Now it’s awkward for all of us…..
Addai Another Aday - February 1, 2012
People are really starting to reach
Anyone else read the profootballtalk.com article regarding Arians ‘supposedly’ confirming Manning is done? All he basically said was that it’s a lot like when he was QB coach in 98 and they had a new coach, QB, etc. Didn’t Irsay confirm that they were drafting a QB very early already? Arians never said a work about the new QB starting. The media is really trying to light fires under the Colts and Manning camps.

DC Coordinator candidates interviewed today and tomorrow
I saw a quote by Irsay that there are DC coordinator candidates interviewing on Wednesday and Thursday. I am suprised that there are no leaks on who is interviewing. I’ll try to post the link if I can find it. It was buried in article about Peyton.
Radcolt - February 1, 2012
It is in the last paragraph, curious who they are interviewing

Interestingly enough
Per owners request, you can no longer track Irsay’s plane on flightaware.
Addai Another Aday - February 1, 2012 via iPhone app
only BBS could contort a story like this
CC is one of the only people Irsay doesn’t fire, and somehow it reflects badly on CC. Where do you get such claims that no college would take him, and that he’ll never be an OC again? And then you suggest he leave town.
This concept may be foreign to those for whom ego isn’t everything. Sometimes people don’t feel the compulsion to be the big shot. CC may welcome a more narrowly defined responsibility. I don’t think it is demeaning, and I don’t think he’s lost face around the league. If anything, he gained it by staying employed and being a loyal team player.
zherebyonki - February 2, 2012
Ahhh... zherisdoufhdgdgjki...
I was wondering if you were coming back after the Colts ended your love affair with Polian. (then again it could still continue, just not with the Colts)
SoCalHoosier - February 2, 2012
Oh, I've never left. I've been watching the mass overreaction and sadly shaking my head.
As a Naptown resident, my first loyalty is to the city/the team. I did think the Polians were treated very ungraciously at the end, especially by this blog and certain fans.
zherebyonki - February 2, 2012
I agree 100%
It would almost seem like the Polians murdered somebody. The fact that their vision failed meant that they had to be replaced, but there was a lot of other garbage being written about them that was totally unnecessary. Remember that not all of Indy folks are as crass.
Antillar - February 2, 2012
you're right, and it's not going to be pretty going forward either
those fans who were spoiled with past success and outraged at the last FO’s “incompetence” would be well advised to have patience with the new crop, since most of them are doing their specific jobs for the first time. There are bound to be hiccups. Let’s just hope they give them 2 full years before they call for heads to roll.
zherebyonki - February 3, 2012
let's remember where we stand right now.
we’ve got a new GM who’s never been a GM before
we’ve got a new HC who’s never been a HC before
we’ve got a new DC who’s never been a DC before
we’ve got a new OL coach, who’s never been an OL coach before
our most accomplished new hire is an OC who was so disliked in Pittsburgh they encouraged him to retire.
yeah, our future looks real bright.
zherebyonki - February 2, 2012
er, strike that, we don't have a DC at all. They guy they wanted stayed in Baltimore
zherebyonki - February 2, 2012
stayed in pittsburgh*
but your point is taken.
BoilerUp1982 - February 2, 2012
my bad. Now they have hired a DC, one who bottomed out in SD & SF
