Are The Steelers Really Going To Hire Jim Caldwell?

Right on the heels of the news that the Colts will hire former Steelers assistant Bruce Arians to run their offense, we now get news that the Steelers are talking to former Colts head coach Jim Caldwell. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review beat writer Mark Baboly tweeted this earlier today:

Now, Tomlin reportedly having breakfast with Caldwell doesn't necessarily mean the Steelers will be hiring him anytime soon. Tomlin and Caldwell are friends, and worked with each other in Tampa Bay under Tony Dungy ten years ago.

However, the Steelers are in the market for a new offensive coordinator, and if they promote current quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner to offensive coordinator, then the Steelers will need a new QB coach. Caldwell was the QB coach in Indianapolis from 2002-2008. Prior to that, he coached the QBs in Tampa Bay in 2001, the year he and Tomlin worked together as assistants under Dungy.

Just something to think about.

[UPDATE]:

Well, wouldn't that be a funny little shuffling of things.

Colts are hiring former Steelers OC Bruce Arians; Steelers considering former Colts HC Jim Caldwell to replace Arians #insideslant
Thanks
ahhh....The Mayans may have been right!!
Yes, please hire Caldwell.
Ironic most Steeler bloggers say good riddance to Arians

and Ben R. seems upset while Colts bloggers say don’t let the door hit you in the ass with Caldwell leaving but Manning seems disappointed.

Wow

That is a perfect hire! And keeping Clyde on as a WR coach (and away from the playbook) is great as well. Jim Irsay is doing the damn thang this offseason. I trust my owner…. I wish my other True Blue fans would as well…

Caldwell

Why would the Steelers hire Caldwell we outsiders ask, because they probably know more about coaching than we do, I can only conclude. Not to mention the endorsements he may be getting from former players and coaches and GM (people who actually know the man). Good luck to him. I personally don’t see him as a great coach but he seems like a good football man.

Step Down

He may do okay as just a QB coach without the responsibility of being over everything. I think he’s a good players position coach as all the players seem to like him. I just think being the overall coach without PM and a defense built for having leads was just too much for him or probably anybody else.

NOPE

he’s joining the ravens.

i’m the best
