Now that the Colts have found their man to lead the newest phase of the 'shoe, we can expect the defense to receive a significant makeover.
Chuck Pagano's vision for the Colts defense is far from crystal clear, but he certainly seemed to be excited about the opportunity to work with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis (if he re-signs) in 2012.
On Thursday, Pagano gave both of the Colts defensive ends a ringing endorsement:
"I was talking to Mr. Irsay, if Wade Phillips can go to the Houston Texans and install the 3-4 with no offseason and make Mario Williams an outside linebacker and stand him up on early downs, that the two explosive, great athletes, the great pass rushers that we have on the edge here, I don’t see an issue."
Does this mean we can expect Freeney/Mathis to flirt with a role similar to Mario Williams? Maybe. It's exciting to think about, at the very least. I've always pondered about the damage Mathis and Freeney could do if they were utilized properly in a hybrid scheme. Heck, if Jerry Hughes sticks around, maybe we'll even see Pagano get some worth out of him in the Joker role.
In addition to Pagano's comments, Mathis was clearly excited when he learned that the former defensive coordinator would be interviewing for the then vacant head coaching job.

While Pagano didn't reveal too much about his ideas during his presser, he did specify that he would like to build the Colts new defense to be "flexible" (variations of the 3-4 and 4-3), simple to execute, but not simple to attack.
Our motto is simple me, complex you. To say I’m a 3-4 guy, we want to build a defense that is really flexible. It’s going to be really simple for our guys to execute, but when the offense prepares for it and they see it on Sunday, it’s going to look very complex to them. Just because we may line up and they say ‘Hey, look, they’re a 3-4 team,’ we could be a 4-3 team on first down, we could be an odd 3-4 look on second down and the Lord only knows on third-and-7-plus. That’s our goal. That would be my answer to that."
Coincidentally enough, Chuck's brother John, who is the defensive coordinator in San Diego, made a similar set of comments during an earlier conference call.
When asked about what to expect from his brother as a head coach, John compared the similarities of their defensive philosophies:
"It’s funny because I got the same types of questions when I took the [job] in San Diego," John Pagano said. "They said I was a 3-4 guy, but I’ve coached in a 4-3 and a 3-4. We do multiple fronts and we have multiple looks. Baltimore was a 4-3 and a 3-4. They play those different types of hybrid defenses that really are game-changing types of defenses. Whatever your personnel suits you, you’re going to be in certain types of fronts and certain types of coverages whether it’s a 3-4 or a 4-3.
"When you have an impact rusher like Robert Mathis, you can see the presence he brings off the edge," John Pagano said. "In anybody’s defense, in anybody’s scheme, Robert Mathis would make a difference. To be able to have him coming off the edge, I think [Chuck] would most welcome that."
John won't be teaming up with his brother in Indianapolis, but that didn't stop him from acknowledging Mathis' ability and Chuck's possible willingness to utilize that ability. It's clear that John knows his brother pretty well and he knows that Mathis is an impact player with high reward.
However, money could likely be the largest obstacle standing in the way of Mathis' future as a Colt. How much will Ryan Grigson value him? I don't think we can expect him to give the Colts a hometown discount, but you can't rule it out with a high-character guy like Mathis.
Another factor for the four-time Pro Bowler will obviously be his emphasis on the pursuit of another ring. With the Colts in total rebuild mode, Mathis might find that it's time to take advantage of his free agency elsewhere.
But with Mathis' excitement about the new head coach and Chuck Pagano's admiration for the pass rusher, it seems like he has a pretty good shot to stick.

These are the type of articles we need to see right now...
All this talk of bickering between Manning and Irsay (which in my opinion, isn’t even bickering at all) is casting too big of a shadow on the positives of the last few days.
I think Pagano is a great hire, and I look forward to not feeling like shit when we punt the ball because we have to watch the Lacey/Jennings cushion or the Ron Dayne stutter run for 13 yards.
Go blue!

bickering
You may be alone in your opinion. It’d be nice if it’s true though. I still get the feeling Manning is gone, regardless of his health. The question is, does he go to another team, or is his health such that he can’t play.
Evanbio - January 27, 2012
I may be...
But I have read the quotes 4 times now, and I think people are reading between the lines too much here…
NanceyBoy - January 27, 2012
Thank you
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thinks this way about the current “feud” going on between Manning and Irsay (and the Colts whole organization).
Manning makes a comment that the building is different and people are walking around on eggshells. Well, yeah! If most of the people I work with are getting fired, I’d be walking around on eggshells too. Who wouldn’t be? Irsay makes a comment that Manning knows that it’s better to keep issues in house than air them out during an interview. Oh, well of course Irsay and the Colts hate Manning and Manning hates the Colts, right?!? This is a non-issue. No doubt things are radically different for the Colts this year than they have been for a long time, but I think this is being blown out of proportion.
Irsay has repeatedly said he wants Manning to retire as a Colt. During last off season, he went so far as to promise the fans that he would do everything in his power to make sure that would happen. Manning has repeatedly said that he wants to stay in Indy and play in one place his whole career. Manning is currently under contract for the next several years. The only question that remains is the same question that’s been out there since Peyton’s last surgery: When will he play again, if ever?
NFLFan83 - January 27, 2012
Also
Right after Irsay said that it’s important to keep things in-house, he went on to say that the Colts and Manning will work together on this going forward like they always have. That part usually gets left out in the expert recaps…
NFLFan83 - January 27, 2012
EXACTLY!
How many “Expert Reports” have you read that leave out Irsay’s words of adoration for Manning? The freaking top headline on Yahoo.com this afternoon was “Owners Harsh Words for Legendary Player”… WTF?
NanceyBoy - January 27, 2012
Would rec this a dozen times if I could
Please- more about the future minus the Manning talk. Truth is I am no good at writing articles about sports, so I rely on you guys to do it. I am very grateful y’all spend the time to write, do analysis etc. My gratitude goes out the window though when it degenerates into “As the Stomach Turns” “Entertainment Weekly” type of stuff and I find it hard to keep my proverbial mouth shut. Like a junkie Jonesing for a fix I come looking for a good sports article to read, and if I get fleeced I get mad. Hahahaa well I guess maybe it’s all on me in the end. Take the high road fellas!

If/when Manning is gone we won’t have to worry about money. We will have the cap room to match really anyone’s offer to Mathis if we want to.
I’m excited about what looks to be our new 3-4 hybrid defense with Freeney and Mathis playing both DE and some OLB. After watching a base 4-3 for so long its going to be interesting to see some new stuff.
We aren’t going to recognize our team next year. I think I’m ready for a change with Luck under center and a 3-4 hybrid defense.
bbxxj - January 27, 2012
Agree
Since early December I’ve been saying this about the whole Manning Situation… It’s win/win.
If he stays? We have Peyton Manning back
If he goes? We have Luck and $$$ to build a competitive D.
NanceyBoy - January 27, 2012
Exactly
It isn’t a lose/lose situation at all.
Peter Storgaard - January 27, 2012
Interesting,
I had a similar train of thought when it came to the Pujols free agency thing, but I hadn’t thought of it that way for Manning.
Sir Sci - January 27, 2012
This is why all this negativity...
from schlubs like JMV and BBS are driving me crazy.
Why are we so dreary and sad? Yes, it sucks to lose a Legend, but I’ve enjoyed every toss he’s made… (Interception or Touchdown).
The ONLY situation that would ruin all of this is if Manning ends up in the AFC. Then you get a conflict of interests. But regardless… if he’s in another jersey, it just gives me TWO games a weekend to be seriously entertained by…
NanceyBoy - January 27, 2012
I love Peyton and always will, but there really isn’t a conflict of interest. The team comes first over any individual player.
It’ll be like when Edge left. You want to see them do well, except when they play the Colts.
TrueBlue87 - January 27, 2012
Agree
The conflict of interest would be, who do I want to win if say he went to the Texans…
Easy answer :-)
NanceyBoy - January 27, 2012
First time I've read it put like that.
I do see the advantages of it. I’d hate to see him go, but you are right in that the Colts would be able to reload quickly. With a better D coach and some money for FA, the Colts could take a bunch of pressure off of a rookie QB. It worked in both Cincy and Balt when they did it.
Music Man - January 27, 2012
Really it worked well
Really you think that these rookies are a success? I don’t, flacco has all but been inconsistent and shaky at times, Andy Dalton will be schooled next season. Rookie starters are less than impressive in there second season and rarely live up to expectation.
kbreboot - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Hope we can keep Mathis.
Pagano just needs to make sure to improve ST play too. It wasn’t just our D that’s been bad for a decade.
Sparhawk - January 27, 2012
I like it
As much as I hate to say it, I’m ready tO cope with manning being gone. I think we can be successful this year if we have a good running game. With Mannings 28 mill off the books we can add some pieces to the defense similar to what Houston did. Anyone have a list of cornerback free agents this year?
IndianaBoy - January 27, 2012 via mobile
There are a good number of Colts vets that I would like to see retained on the team
even if they cost quite a bit. Mathis, though, is probably the most key one to keep though. He has an element that few other players in this league can rival.
Sir Sci - January 27, 2012
Great article!
I’m really looking forward to this offseason now. we got ourselves a dynamic GM and a tough defensive HC- love it! After all this pain and misery in the last 5 months I’m all in for that kinda stuff. FA and the draft will be a ball- if only the Maning thing had a positive solution for everybody…
Bring on some hybrid schemes- I’m really curiours to see what Pagano can make out of this “defense”…
Martin Steinkogler - January 27, 2012
$$$
The most important things for the front office to do now that a head coach is in place are find his assistants, renegotiate an extension for Freeney and resign Mathis. I have confidence all three are under way.
TrueBlue87 - January 27, 2012
Drop Manning
We need to get a dominant defense going to help Andrew Luck out.
bobbyblitz - January 27, 2012
that seems like the body saying "drop the brain"
muncie_in_this - January 27, 2012
Something about a tough defense
that just gives you confidence in a big game. We’ve gone so long knowing that Peyton has to win the game for us.
GrizzColt - January 27, 2012
Nevis
I hope there is a place for him. He’s too talented to not fit.
GrizzColt - January 27, 2012
love nevis too
he’s going to be a stud when healhy. I think he could be a DE in a 3-4 or DT in 3-4
coltsgolfbeer - January 27, 2012
Even if we go to the 3-4 hybrid like it seems he will get plenty of time in a four man front and 3-tech where he excels. You sub out defensive lineman so much during the game Pagano can put his guys in all kinds of sets to get the best out of their talents.
bbxxj - January 27, 2012
Gain/Lose
I think Mathis could benefit of a 3-4; however, Freeney is a pure 4-3 DE, If we put him as LB his spin move becomes useless.
k1 - January 27, 2012
I’m so excited about all these changes!
Remember when irsay said “big changes in the next 18 months” !!
Do you think he knew all thse would happen?
Nojan - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Alameda Ta'amu (Washington)
Would be a huge draft pick in the second round. A true NT 6’3 345! I expect the Colts to either reach for him with pick 34 or to trade back into the second round and pick him around 45-50. Josh Chapman from Alabama may also get drafted in the 3rd Round to play the NT…although he is more in the 310 range which is a little “small”
Before I was rooting to get Chase Minnifield or Mark Barron at 34. But with a new system, the NT is the most important need now. Some CBs available in later rounds could be Shaun Prater, Dequan Menzie and Cliff Harris
(206)NightRidah - January 27, 2012
Not a fan of Harris but I do like Prater. I also like Micah Hyde, the other Iowa corner, Donnie Fletcher from Boston College, and Casey Heyward from Vanderbilt.
TrueBlue87 - January 27, 2012
Casey Heyward's a baller
Yes please.
