Report: Pro Football Talk Says Ravens DC Chuck Pagano To Be Next Colts Head Coach [UPDATE] It's Now Official

If you sent a tweet to Colts Owner Jim Irsay yesterday with Ravens Defensive Coordinator Chuck Pagano, it looks like you have a chance to win Super Bowl tickets. Citing a league source, Pro Football Talk announced via Twitter that Pagano will be the next Head Coach of the Colts:

Pagano held the Defensive Coordinator position for the Ravens for just one year, and was the team's secondary coach for three season before that. He also coached the secondary between 2001-06 with the Browns and Raiders. He also seemed late to the interview game, but obviously he was busy with the Ravens up until last Sunday. It makes you wonder whether the Colts would have gone in a different direction had the Ravens won last weekend and were all set to play in the Super Bowl.

Now, this is not official news, but I doubt PFT would stick their necks out like this if they weren't very sure about it. We'll obviously update when we get more news.

[UPDATE]: Tweet from NFL Network's Jason LaConfora:

What are your thoughts on the hire? Let us know.

[UPDATE 2]: It's now official. Pagano is the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. They team will hold a 3 p.m. ET press conference tomorrow to announce the hiring.

3-4???
He was secondary coach before, and Ravens play 4-3
The fact that you think the Ravens play a 4-3 shows a lo about your FB knowledge

Cody weighs 365lbs you can’t play 4-3 with him
guy…

Wilfork is 340+ and Pats play 4-3. Size doesn’t make the scheme.

really?

You can’t play a 43 with big DT’s? really?

Can I get some of whatever you’re smoking?

I am not gonna argue with you

There is a reason guys that heavy are not generally in a 4-3 because they can’t stay on the field because of exhaustion. Most 4-3 defenses accentuate the DE rush while a 3-4 uses the LBs as rushers…

With the Ravens having Ngata and Cody it’s almost like 12-11…Ngata is a freak and can play anywhere like Wilfork…but it’s rare that you see someone closer to 4bills than 3 play in a 4-3 mane…

Ravens use a 3-4 base and take Mt. Cody out on passing downs…

not really true

while teams probably don’t want someone like cody in a 43, you can have plenty of size in the middle. that was probably best utilized by the sb winning ravens defense with tony saragusa and sam adams working the middle….two very large men.

False

Ravens run a 3-4, but with a multiple front

Ravens play 3-4 base

Switching off often.

Just like the Chiefs.

Then go to 2 man front on passing downs. They run a 3-4 base defense, then go to a 2 man front on passing downs. Pass rush from outside lbs and a db now and then.

The Ravens play a hybrid defense, like a lot of teams.

Mix up 3 and 4 man fronts. One gap and two gap, and in some situations wil line up one or two men on the line.

I think the point is they do not play the Tampa 2.

super duper
To be fair, he was DC for only one year

But he has a lot of experience in the secondary, which is (in my opinion) the area where we need the most help. Add in a ton of work at various colleges and two other NFL teams (Browns and Raiders).

I really like this choice. Excited to see what he can do with our players.

Ravens plays a hybrid

3-4/4-3 look, similar to the Patriots only better. Should be interesting.

i just saw this on NFL Network

if we didn’t get Mike Zimmer i wanted this guy.

id rather have Zimmer
me too but this isn't a bad hire imo
If we're going defense,

Pagano or Zimmer are fine hires. I’m fine going defense too. Would be nice to have a good defense for a change.

well i did tweet and was right about this too..

but I am excited about this if it does in fact happen. chuck is a big time players coach and personality fits i think what irsay will do now which is hire a excellent OC to run the offense and let chuck worry about overall especially defense kind of like back in the mid 90’s colts then you had infante coaching the offense basically and a DC who handled that part. i’m also excited that his defenses are aggressive and he brought back that attitude the ravens lost again. best part is we have coaches in place before senior bowl on sat.

here’s just hoping baltimore fans get over this departure faster than they did the colts which they STILL crack on colts fans although the man who moved the colts passed away, most complaining fans were not even born yet, and baltimore fans forget they stole the browns team away so are hypocrites.

a little surprised

we didn’t go with a coach who has experience developing young QB’s (trestman)

Luck needs a lot less development, then the rest of the team
who says we still cannot get him as OC?

CFL is no NFL and I think he still can get got.

he makes 2 million a year as a HC in the CFL

demotion and a pay decrease, unlikely

factor in the high taxes

and the fact that you have to live in canada….he can be persuaded.

And...

NFL OC > CFL HC, whatever the salary differential.

it's a shot we can get him to be OC
Considering the fact that you guys are drafting Luck

I’d have wanted Chud. He’s done a phenominal job developing Cam as a passer.

Run a hybrid 3-4/4-3

Using Mathis as a LB?!? :D

I'm sure, he will get a DT or 2, who will allow Freeney and Mathis to play better.
Maybe he can get

some production out of Hughes as well…

agree this will happen

he will figure out a way to use hughes

First thing I thought of

I remember the analysis on here saying how poor coaching it was to have Hughes play at DE with his hand in the ground. We’ll see if Hughes can do something.

Cory Redding from Ravens is FA

He also played this scheme for a long time and is more stout, than our DTs.

Grigs first FA signing
Maybe Jaret Johnson too
Pagano

Good hire.

Thank god it wasn’t Tressel.

Right there with you

100%.

Ditto.

I actually didn't have a problem

with Tressell. The man made a mistake. He didn’t kill 6 million jews for crying out loud. Honestly they’re aren’t too many coaches/people in the world who haven’t made mistakes. That means if none of you have lived a life without making one, you’re in no position to judge anyone else…

I don't think any one was throwing genocide around.

Guess you wanted to take it up a notch.

Yea. You were by saying he

shouldn’t be a coach because he lied. everyone on this blog has lied, yet you act like your slate is squeaky clean. The only difference between Tressell and you is you haven’t been caught yet. Please get off your high and mighty horse as if you’re the freakin pope.

Going back through brown11b's recent comment history

he never said anything about Tressel. Or you just targeting him as an outlet of your anger, seeing as he called out your Bill Walton-esque hyperbole?

Nobody here lied

about what did and didn’t happen with their major Big Ten program. Very different situation than an everyday lie, deywalka. You’re overboard here. You can’t compare us to Tressell. Yes, he made a mistake, but you don’t get a HC position by having a good run at college level and then no NFL experience. I’d prefer Tressell to have a couple years as OC somewhere in the NFL before HC opportunities were given to him.

personally

i think players should be allowed jerseys, rings, and all that crap. the ncaa is a joke. hell, cam newton’s dad should have held out for more money….

Ravens

They ran a 4-3 hybrid. Pagano is known as a very good secondary coach prior to landing DC job in Baltimore. He played safety in college.

Ravens aren’t typically considered “character” guys. Could be an interesting shift.

Colts secondary aren't typically considered "effective" guys.

I’ll take that trade-off.

idk about that i haven't heard any arrest coming from the ravens

besides Ray Lewis years ago

Colts arn't considered "great secondary" so . . .

Good hire. Maybe Pags can get something out of Hughes who was listed as an OLB when he came out of college.

Why do I expect to hear Dennis Miller when I first hear him speak?
Flaccid

Not an exciting hire. At least he’s a D guy. Now all we need are players to fit the scheme.

When it comes to pipe hittin’ thugs, I will willingly hide the bloody knife if it brings me the next young Ray Lewis.

Pags's news conference is tomorrow at 3
This is a great hire!

No more Tampa 2!

I guess the 33rd pick will be a NT…Freeney or Mathis can def play in a 3-4 hybrid. Hughes should be a solid role player now. They will need a SS and a big DE.

They will suck next year but after a draft or two should be built correctly moving forward

Don't forget about...

Drake Nevis and Jamaal Anderson. Those guys could be perfect DE’s in a 3-4 scheme, provided we have a huge, space-eating NT. I think Robert Mathis (and Jerry Hughes) are suited perfectly for the “Terrell Suggs role” of Pagano’s defense. ~260 LB OLB who rushes the passer 90% of the time, but can occasionally drop into coverage to mix up blitz packages.

Not really sure how Freeney would fit in with a 3-4 hybrid…Maybe he’d sit early downs in favor of Mathis/Anderson/Nevis – and play passing downs as the team moves to a 4-3? Who knows.

I do know 1 thing – NO MORE FUCKING TAMPA-2 SOFT CUSHIONS!

This is a damn good pick!

I like this pick too. Luck + defense = championship ball baby!

I forgot about Drake!

Yeah…Drake/Anderson at DE with a True NT…

Then you could have Mathis or Freeney at OLB with Hughes at the other OLB plus Angerer…There is some talent that can play 3-4 provided they have a Legit NT

i kinda see nevis as the odd man out....along with freeney
Hmmm...

I agree about Freeney, but I’m not sure how his contract works out (can we cut him? trade him? what’s his cap hit?)

But I disagree about Nevis. He seems to have the size/strength to hold an edge against the run as a 3-4 DE, but has clearly shown enough burst/speed to pressure the QB.

Don't rule out corner

A secondary specialist might want to go that way early.

Thank God

for a new defensive scheme! Hallelujah

Say Texan fan here

Want to congrats on your new coaching hire. Did your QB coach get fired too? If so do you know of any coaches who could come in and really work with Luck?

i think most colts fans want clyde gone.

i say its still not out of the question to get someone like trestman from the cfl here as OC/ QBC.

well good luck to you guys.
We're waiting to hear

If Clyde Christensen is out as OC it will 100% clinch no more Peyton. I’m sure we’ll know about Clyde’s status within a day.

do you think you have the personal to run a 3-4?
not quite yet

Need a NT. Need an upgrade at at least 1 LB spot. We got the DE’s if we re-do Freeney’s deal and re-sign Mathis.

you would leave them at DE?
Neither Freeney or Mathis are 3-4 DEs...

They would have to be LBs…

Anderson would be perfect 3-4 DE. Perhaps Freeney could be moved around…Math would def have to move to LB but then you have Hughes also…Angerer is an emerging playmaker…if they could get a true belly to play NT they actually have some parts to run it

Also, don't forget these LBs we've signed in recent days.

Tons of them flowing into Indy via Grigson.

Poe is looking like more a possibility

if we move to a hybrid system.

drunken chiefs fan here fellas. we been fugurin this shit out for a minute.

you need 2 big stout mfers for ends. they gotta seal that corner huge against runs. outside LB’s gotta rush the qb like mfers.inside lbs gotta be gap chargin hard hittin mfers. Safety’s gotta be tacklin mfers. cb’s gotta be able to press and jam like mfers. Thats how a team succeeds in a 3-4 hybrid. Chiefs got that down now. Took two and a half years. Good luck you mfers!

Lol

Awesome!

just change a couple peoples job assignments, that's all, peice of cake! Back to the superbowl they go :)

Seriously though, its gonna take a couple years for the team to “figure out”(couple years of drafting the right personnel, couple yearsof signing the right FA’s) the 3-4(IMO the best kind of D). Will that DE b able to play OLB? Can this guy play NT?…

Just… gonna b a process, ya know.

AND IF

And if he is kept, It could very well say they are leaving the offense alone and going DEFENSE in the draft. Trade the #1 and get a boat load of players to start building his defense. Draft a QB in later Rnd to sit, learn and relieve Manning in a couple years. He knows you can win without a franchise QB. Say Good-bye to Freeney and his big contract along with Bracket, Lacy. Sign Mathis and bring in a couple of FA to fill holes. All you LUCK lovers need to start being a little more open minded as to what can happen!

not if

Peyton is not coming back. They are clearly rebuilding the team structure/roster/culture

Looking more and more

like he isn’t

chiefs fan again.

you can get to thr playoffs and lose, but you can’t win the MFin Super bowl without a franchise QB. Look who’s left and who they beat to get there.

to be honest

both teams were very lucky to make it to the sb….actually they should have lost. but yeah, 100x easier with franchise qb

Robert Mathis

Hiring Pagano might mean they re-sign Robert. He has stated repeatedly how he’d like to play in Baltimore’s defense.

I would certainly hope.

Probably just comes down to how big of a deal his agent wants. Also, BBS, do you think it’s a cinch Freeney’s deal gets re-done and pushed out a few more years. He’s not a spring chicken but still quite effective.

Also Wayne, Pagano was in Miami for most of Wayne's time
Good call.

I totally forgot about his tenure at The U. He produced there as well.
Maybe not the most exciting name but the future looks bright. My caulk is starting to firm up. LOL

WOULD be sweet to resign him !!!!
In a 3-4 hybrid I think Mathis would have more value than Freeney

Maybe they clip Free and redo Mathis. If Hughes is a true 3-4 player and can thrive in that system they are already moving in the correct direction

Excited...

I admit this has me a bit excited! This team needed a 1st time HC to go along with the new direction we are headed as a franchise. The fact that he coached DB’s successfully in CLE, OAK and BALT is a plus. What’s also a plus is that he was able to pick up some good coaching in BAL as a DC. Yea it was only for one year, but there was no drop off and I liked how he slowed down Brady. So he will be able to bring great oversight to whoever we bring in to run tha D. I haven’t met this cat yet via the press yet so i can’t give my final stamp of approval on him yet. But this has me excited nonetheless. Good Job Jimbo!

Awesome hire!

Sure will be able to build a GREAT defense with all the picks from tradeing the #1. Defense wins Championships!

Get help for the delusions that you're suffering from.

Anyway, I like the hire.

Nice hire

Colts fans —> new pagans

Jerry Hughes?

I bet Jerry Hughes is excited… Think this guy stands a chance of becoming what we thought he would be now that he has a clean slate and new coaching? It’s either Mathis or Hughes for 2012…not both.

i don't know

i can’t get excited about a guy that can’t even get on the field for special teams

You can have Jack Del Rio as... uhhh... 2nd string water-boy.

should be interesting with jags vs colts next year
two new coaches
maybe two young qb’s

NFL people say Pagano

is like Rex Ryan, players type coach and very fiery… God I hope he isnt a tool like Rex

Strong and physical defense + great QB play = championships

Great QB + Skill players + Poor soft D = 13-3 lose in divisional round of playoffs

Great hire

I was rooting for a good DC to come in as HC.

Man...Indianapolis loves stealing things from Baltimore!
Truly the right man for the job.

I applaud the move

I'm going to listen in at Baltimore Beatdown to

see what they’re saying.

they are not happy lol
True, but they're not reacting too bad to it.

I thought they’d be going crazy. Maybe they’re still numb from the loss this past weekend.

at the very least

fans won’t be able to gripe about having a statue for a coach on the sidelines anymore

Personally

I love it. In every single way.

Great news

I for one am Extremely happy! A DEFENSIVE minded firey HC is just what the COLTS needed! It’s going to be interesting to see how things unfold in the next 2 months!!! I HOPE Irsay has more surprises for COLTS fans to come!!!!!

Hopefully, this means

the end of the hiring midgets.

Amen!

Building with defense size and physicality…

Quite a novel concept

Yeah.....speed AND size....who would have thought?
*tsk tsk*

Don’t you know they should be called " vertically challenged " people?

deja vu?

Didn’t we hire a “defensive specialist” for head coach a few years ago? Dungy something, if I remember…

yeah, except the defense has been crap for years,

except during the super bowl run of 2007. Hopefully, that won’t happen again.

....the 'crap' part,....not the super bowl part.
i think we found out

that monte kiffin was the specialist

I futher mocking love this!

RIP Tampa-2, Indy edition. You will not be missed one bit. Most other defensive styles rely on strong DB play if you plan to get pressure with LBs as well, so a solid secondary coach becoming the head coach is a great move. The Manning era may be over, but Irsay seems to have learned from his mistakes and wants to start the Luck era on the right foot. Can’t wait to see who he fills out his staff with.

Once Bob Sanders went down completely our secondary (Tampa-2), it became a competely mess.

Excited - he will be good

Now we just have to get a Good OC Clyde needs to go – we need someone better !!!!

I went to Baltimore Beatdown

They are mostly pissed about losing Pagano. They really seem to like him a lot. I dont know much about him but seems to be a real good hire.

When he moves to Indy

Irsay should send a Mayflower truck to pick his stuff up…

Love this hire!

Now are we keeping Christensen to develop Luck, or is Clyde the next to go?

Also, let’s hope pagano brings a special teams coach with him…

he has to, since the colts don't have one
I hope they can pay Trestman enough

to leave Montreal to be our OC

Next hire should definately be a great special teams coach

Could somebody give suggestions on the next special teams coach.

What about

Defensive Coordinators? Think he’ll bring anyone from Baltimore?

I wonder about any Baltimore position coaches . . .

. . . . .who may have the chops to come along with Pagano as coordinators ? I know zip about the Ravens’ coaching staff other than Harbaugh and Pagano (now). I should think that would be the most logical place to start looking . We are likely going to need three coordinators, since I seriously doubt Clyde sticks.

Clyde needs to go

get OC first then special teams coach and thank goodness no Tressel he needs to get some assistant coaching experience in the NFL a great oallege coach does not equal a great NFL coach ASK the Sabanator

Yes

Tressel would have been a disaster

If we hire Trestman for OC then I think the Colts are in real good shape

I think Pagano will bring in some good defensive coaches. I like the direction this team is headed but sad that Peyton will most likely be gone. With 3 neck surgeries he probably wont play more than a couple of years. He needs to have a chance to win another Super Bowl and he cant do it here.

If he can't do it here

he should do it in San Fran would be nice to trade him for some Defensive players but there will be no trade with him No Jets , if he goes to Phins then I will buy season tickets down here

It wouldnt bother me if he went to Miami

I do think he will look at Arizona because of Fitzgerald. That would be scary for the rest of the NFL. I think he would win a Super Bowl with San Fran but I dont think he goes there.

yes they are sticking with Smith
which they will regret
I do like the hire

Glad that we’re moving towards a new era. Sad that Peyton likely won’t be coming back. Happy about Andrew Luck coming into town though. I bet he’s secretly happy with the events that are unfolding in Indy because he knows it most likely means it’s the end of Peyton’s career in Indy so he can play right away.

I'm quite excited about this

I think Pagano will be an complete upgrade over Caldwell, I’m hoping to see new things on defense.

My soap dish would be an upgrade over Caldwell.
