5 months ago: INDIANAPOLIS, IN - DECEMBER 18: Jim Caldwell the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts watches the action during Colts 27-13 win over the Tennessee Titans in the NFL game at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 18, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)
In a scene that can only be described as bizarre and surreal, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell met with the media today per his regularly scheduled 12:30 p.m. press conference only to announce that, literally, nothing is happening.
As of right now, there is no change in head coach. There is no change in the front office. There is no change, period.
All this despite news from several credible sources, including Colts center Jeff Saturday, that change is indeed a-comin!
Nearly everyone at the press conference came away thinking that the Colts are, quite literally, so screwed up right now that they can't even fire anyone properly.
Here are some tweets:
Phil Wilson, Indianapolis Star:
#Colts fans, to be honest, I have no idea what's going on ... maybe team won't announce changes for another day or two, IDK.
Bob Kravitz, Indianapolis Star, here:
Jim Caldwell scheduled to speak to media at 12:30 -- If he's going to be fired, that would be a strange deal -- interesting
And here:
As of now, it's biz as usual for Colts. Caldwell talked about season. No announcements. PR says won't be anything for a while. Evaluating.
Collin McCollough, Bleacher Report:
Well, I see the Colts are handling this about as terribly as I expected them to handle it. He said, she said. What a mess.
Ashley Adamson, WISH-TV sports anchor in Indianapolis:
Why else would Caldwell not know about his future, one way or the other? Colts baffle me though, so who knows.
Caldwell refused to talk about the NFL Draft, and stated that, 'What I'm doing is going on like I normally do. Moving forward until otherwise noted.'
Honestly, this just makes the Colts and Jim Irsay look like cruel, incompetent morons. Caldwell is a goner. To make him get up in front of the press and try and pass things off as being 'business as usual' is an insult to anyone with a brain.

I will say this for Caldwell, he owned up to the 2-14 record. No players thrown under the bus. He blamed no one, save himself. To quote my buddy Derek Schultz at 1260 AM radio in Indianapolis, 'I hope Hue Jackson and Brian Kelly were listening.'
For those of you thinking this afternoon's odd and embarrassing press conference means nothing will happen, fear not. Even Jeff Saturday thinks changes are coming. Irsay might be finalizing what those changes are, and thus needs time to sort out the details.
Still, it would have been better to spare Caldwell the insult that was that press conference.

If Caldwell is here next season
I’m going to become a Bucs fan.
bobbyblitz - January 2, 2012
Wow
Talk about “out of the frying pan and into the fire”…
That’s like saying “if I burn my finger, I’m going to just cut my hand off!”
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
you're a colts fan?
danorocks17 - January 2, 2012
Considering he wants to part ways with Peyton Manning
Because “it’s time to move on”, I sincerely doubt it.
DonkeyBoner - January 2, 2012
Donkeyboner!
LOL!
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
You're right
That formula hasn’t slowly been getting worse and worse over the past 4 seasons. Please continue doing the same thing, it’s bound to start getting better if you continue.
bobbyblitz - January 2, 2012
The Colts...
…have gotten worse and worse with Peyton Manning under center. Yep..
The Learned Hand - January 2, 2012
Colts second bub
bobbyblitz - January 2, 2012
good riddance
ive read ur commens the last few.days and thought there was no way you were a real colts fan anyway. either that or u stopped taking your meds!
ColtKing - January 2, 2012
"He said she said"??
Huh? Colts front office, coach and owner have said nothing. As for the players, that’s like asking the Walmart Manager of your local store what Sam Walton is going to do (ya, I know he’s dead).
Sheesh.
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
I do think that both him and the Polians should go
But the Polians should get more blame. If you don’t have a better backup QB it’s their fault not Caldwells.
And the drafting last couple years has been terrible.
Detroitnr1 - January 2, 2012
Drafting has not been terrible -
If you want empirical proof, I’ll direct you to another blog.
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
Empirical proof based on subjective opinion.
Peter Storgaard - January 2, 2012
Huh, what huh?
I pored over it, and review the stats. Didn’t see much opinion there.
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
i agree
ive seen the article. it.confirmed my suspicions that the polian bashing was mostly without merit
ColtKing - January 2, 2012
I don't wish anyone to be fired don't get me wrong
But what a buzz kill of a press conference. What the hell did Caldwell talk to Irsay and the Polians talk about? Still evaluating so we may fire you later in the week, but oh, go ahead and continue with the press conference…let’s play it by ear.
OR…are they still waiting for the Manning meeting and then go from there? Wasn’t he suppose to meet up with them today?
ColtsFanNChiTown - January 2, 2012
Didn't he have a whole disgusting 2-14 season to evaluate?
And, now he needs more time? lol
Ayrshire - January 2, 2012
"Irsay might be finalizing what those changes are, and thus needs time to sort out the details."
Why can’t you just say that without throwing in the “cruel, incompetent morons” bit?
Who cares what they look like? There’s no difference between making changes today and taking time to be 100% sure the plan is the right one and doing it in a week. The best candidates for replacing everyone are still active in the playoffs and can’t be hired anyway. Taking all the time necessary to make the right choices before relieving people of their livelihood isn’t cruel, it’s the right thing to do as a person and a boss.
willyduer - January 2, 2012
That's called "flair"...
:-)
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
Yeah
it isn’t like we are in a hurry. Let’s get it right this time. I don’t want another few years of incompetent coaching with possibly a new, young QBs future on the line.
Peter Storgaard - January 2, 2012
No way...
…I’m watching another 16 games of Caldwell staring blankly on the sideline wearing a headset, but not saying a single word into it (or to a player, for that matter) all damn game.
Please bring in Jeff Fischer. Please.
I'm Not Alone, I'm Just Blue - January 2, 2012 via mobile
I kind of feel bad
I’ve seen his press conferences and behind the scenes videos of him talking to the team, and he seems like a really, really, really likeable guy. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get the job done and will get canned. Just wondering how much even a coach like Gruden or Fisher could do with a substandard team without their franchise quarterback
ColtRock - January 2, 2012
See, that's the problem with being human
You have to hate every once of his personality and hope he slides under a gas truck and tastes his own blood. Only then are you a true fan.
By the way, I agree with you. I think other than not emoting enough, and being terribly conservative, he seems to be an okay guy. But it would be boring for this blog to write: “Caldwell is a nice guy who is not totally incompetent, but we probably need someone a bit more decisive.”.
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
once -> ounce
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
Well played, Mr. Irsay and Messrs. Polian
You have successfully trolled the entire sports news industry by simply not doing anything today.
indymike - January 2, 2012
hahah truth
danorocks17 - January 2, 2012
Why are any of you surprised by this?
The writing was on the wall when Polian said “I hope Caldwell doesn’t go 0-16” and he won the next two games.
We should’ve rooted for an 0-16 season apparently that’s bad as far as the Colts are concerned.
CF4L - January 2, 2012
Here is a possible angle
Irsay, Polian, and Caldwell met last night and discussed a possible coaching change. They may be discussing the situation with other coaching candidates and then deciding if they will keep with the status quo or moving in a different direction. They also may have given JC the option to stick around in a position other than HC and a period of time to mull that over.
This would explain the tone of the press conference. My guess is they’re talking to other candidates and then making a decision on whether they will or won’t keep Caldwell.
Mark Olson - January 2, 2012
Intelligent and pragmatic post.
buymymonkey - January 2, 2012
IF THEY ARE GETTING FIRED
then buyouts have to be discussed and negotiated. Additionally, all the assistant coaches have to be be contractually dealt with as well. This stuff doesn’t always happen easily or quickly. There are a lot of reasons that could conceivably hold things up. Or maybe they are going to keep things the way they are.
This blog can’t look at anything objectively when it comes from the front office. Doesn’t fit the meme that the front office is incompetent.
javen - January 2, 2012
..newsflash: the front office IS incompetent.
That’s why they’ve been fired.
Ayrshire - January 2, 2012
no rush as long as he is fired later this week
let them get all their plans into place,, maybe they will offer him the assisitant head coaching job,, better offer than he will get anywhere else!!!!
OBGYNOSUPREME - January 2, 2012
I just think Caldwell called a Timeout just to slow things down a bit. Informed by Irsay and Polian that there indeed were no Timeouts left and the season was over….Caldwell just stared at them. It kind of made everyone uncomfortable so they needed time to regroup.
ps…Saturday said changes were coming, Irsay said that as well to the team. No one mentioned who was getting or going to get fired. The media was and is expecting something to happen and kind of ran with it.
No bigs it will get done.
Ralla32 - January 2, 2012
He does not have to fire him today
Let Irsay get all his plans in place and then he can fire him later this week.

Bill and Chris both fired! GREAT!
chihoosierguy - January 2, 2012
Now, that means
that Polian’s been fired everywhere he’s been, right?
Ayrshire - January 2, 2012
You know there was a report out there that Tony Dungy would ?..
Not mind being a general manager, Irsay love Tony..who knows
armycolts25 - January 2, 2012
Hope Not!
Tony Dungy has wouldn’t fire Caldwell and he would draft RGIII instead of Luck, not sure that would be a good move.
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
Nah!
Nah! It doesn’t feel like the day they got Saddam, it feels like the day I kicked my ex-gf out. She had it coming just like the Polian!

uhuuuuuuuuuu!!!!
Irsay is the fearless one!!!! now we get a real GM and a real coach please

I view Irsay in a totally different light now.
Ayrshire - January 2, 2012
and no more polian's show
and no more BBS rants about the polians… now there nothing more to read about in this blog hahahahaa
thebossuzzi - January 2, 2012
hopefully the next vice chairman is good
Keysta101 - January 2, 2012
What Now?
So whats going to happen now? My guess is that Irsay has already been making arrangements to move in the new GM who most likely will want to bring in his own coach. If the GM has any brains it will be a coach who can develop young QB’s so that the Colts can expedite the development of Andrew Luck.
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
No more nepotism!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ayrshire - January 2, 2012
NO MORE CAPSLOCK, HOLDING DOWN KEYSSSS ON THE KEYBOARDDDDD AND EXCESSIVE EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

didn’t think he would do it HE is committed to winning he ain’t cleaning house to get a shitty coach or GM in there!!!!!!!
OBGYNOSUPREME - January 2, 2012
If Irsay names a respectable GM, I'll give him some credit.
For now, this —
DonkeyBoner - January 2, 2012
Manning Trade?
Is it possible to sign and trade Manning if he is healthy? I hope so because I know there are alot of teams that are on the brink of winning a championship if only they had a QB. So would it be a good idea to trade manning to a playoff quality team for draft picks and players?
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
It's possible
He would need to restructure his current contract though, or else the team is on the hook for $28M even if he is traded.
DonkeyBoner - January 2, 2012
Kinda expensive
Sounds like a very unlikely scenario I think its going to come down to a release of Manning.
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
waht are the odds
that the Hoos would upset #2 , colts would lose and get #1 pick and Irsay fire the Polians would have been some long odds in Vegas for that trifecta!!!!
OBGYNOSUPREME - January 2, 2012
Irsay Did It Right!
Jim Irsay went about the Polian firings in the right manner because he is just getting rid of the GM (Bill and Chris Polian). He is going to allow his new GM to make the decision of hiring a new coach because a GM has to work closely with a coach its essential that they have a good working relationship which was lacking between Polian and previous coaches.
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
Angry?????
Im considering a screen name change after this bloodletting. I will now be known as the guy formerly known as AngryColtsFan. Ummmmmm….then again that is kind of long maybe I should just leave it alone.
AngryColtsFan - January 2, 2012
IRSAY is a good owner
all he wants to do is WIN!!!!!!
OBGYNOSUPREME - January 2, 2012
