over 1 year ago: OAKLAND CA - DECEMBER 26: Actor Rob Lowe looks on during the Indianapolis Colts and the Oakland Raiders NFL game at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on December 26 2010 in Oakland California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)
Colts owner Jim Irsay and actor Rob Lowe are friends. Colts fans have often seen Lowe attending games at Lucas Oil Stadium. So, when dirty bloggers like me see tweets like these from Lowe, we take notice:
Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL. Wow. #Colts
— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) January 18, 2012
#Colts fans, let's hope my info is wrong. Don't like being wrong, but this time... I'm hoping#NFL #Manning
— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) January 18, 2012
Don't know if Lowe's tweets are well-sourced. Don't know if the information is factual. All I know is Lowe talks to Irsay, and Irsay knows more about Manning's current health and state-of-mind than anyone other than Peyton himself.
The Colts fired Peyton's friend and head coach yesterday. He's 35-years-old. The Colts will draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck No. 1 overall. Maybe, just maybe, Peyton doesn't want to do another rodeo with a new coach, regardless of whether it's here or in another city.
We'll keep our eyes peeled if any other reports surface on the possible retirement of Peyton Manning.
[UPDATE]: We have an update from Peyton Manning's father, Archie (via Chris Mortensen):
Archie Manning laughed when he heard @RobLowe said Peyton will retire,"Noooo...he ain't retiring. I think he would've told me." #NFL32

Is it bad that I don't know who Rob Lowe is?
And after looking him up, the only movies I’ve ever seen with him are the Austin Powers series.

You've NEVER seen Wayne's World?!?!
Go to the nearest video store and rent it NAO!!! You deprived human being.
coltsfan723 - January 18, 2012
The 28 million dollars will not be paid to Peyton Manning and this is
a pre-emptive move for Manning to save face and retire. Its too much money and its likely Peyton needs more time to heal if he even attempts to come back. Plus, Peyton is not going to keep the seat warm for one year for Luck. Basically, Peyton retires or is released and signs with another team next year. He’s not going to wait one year, and then have to move his family and house to another city/team.

And West Wing too.

If they start firing coaches on the offensive side especially the OC then we have our answer on Manning
ColtsFanNChiTown - January 18, 2012
Well they have already fired coaches on the offensive side.
There is our answer
pattymac - January 18, 2012
Yea I messed up there...I still say if they hold onto Clyde then Manning still has a chance as a Colt (slim)
ColtsFanNChiTown - January 18, 2012
More specifically if they let go Christensen...

Im sure christiansen will be back coaching little league in a matter of hours.

SpanishColtsFan - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Looking forward to a new season.
I just want a winner to come in. Either Greg Roman, or Jim Tressel. I think it owuld be awesome if we got Roman considering he was Lucks OC at Stanford!
pattymac - January 18, 2012
Plus
It looks like San Fran will be the team to beat in the NFL moving forward. It wouldn’t hurt to aquire someone with intimate knowledge of their organization and coaching tendencies.

Rob Lowe
Hahahahahahaha. Although he could play Adam Schefter in ESPN: The Movie.

If Peyton is going to retire though
I hope it’s because he doesn’t want to play anymore, not because he doesn’t want to learn a new system or anything. I would hate for the Colts to force him into retirement.
Coltsfan1345 - January 18, 2012
If its true how tacky of Rob Lowe to announce it like that it should be something Manning says directly.
He’s earned that right.

Condon says no
I take his agents comments, over an actors.
coltsfan723 - January 18, 2012
Consider that it is Condon's job to protect the interests of Peyton Manning
It is definitely not in the best interest of Manning to have his retirement story leaked by an actor over twitter – it is Condon’s job to refute this and control the information as best he can. Lowe, on the other hand, not only has pretty credible ties to Irsay and the Colts, but also has absolutely zero reason to make this up.
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
It could be true but why would Irsay want that out there now? I mean if he wants people to buy season tickets next year this wouldn’t help his cause. And if Irsay told him he’s a bigger tool than I thought
CF4L - January 19, 2012
I don't think that Irsay meant for this information to get out, and who's to say Lowe didn't acquire it through another avenue
Hollywood’s agents have sports players under their umbrella as well – information overlap is inevitable. Lowe, being a Colts fan, might’ve gotten this information from a friend within CAA (Creative Artists Agency – Tom Condon’s Agency).
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Well if that’s the case Manning should fire his agent for letting something like this slip
Its his career he should announce it when he wants to but I wouldn’t put it past Jimbo to blab to Lowe he’s a tool after all.
CF4L - January 19, 2012
Careful what you wish for
All you so called fans wishing for the COLTS to release Manning. What do you think the backlash will be? NOT from other fans , but by other veteran players? Do you really expect them to come out and play there guts out for LUCK!? Will they have the same winning attitude for IRSAY? I think several players who have battled along side Peyton will be upset to say the least! And who could blame them. Manning isn’t the only reason for the COLTS decade of excellents, he couldn’t have done it by himself. But he is a GREAT teamate and leader and I think alot of players will take it personally. If Peyton is let go, look for many more players to follow. Anyone who contimplated retiring will! Anyone who is at the end or near the end of a carreer will go! Anyone who can ask for a trade will! The COLTS will be 1 OVER HYPED QB surrounded by a cast of average players!!!

Tommy boy
He was also in tommy boy, sabotaging Chris Farley’s character by switching the shipping orders. Ultimately he got hit in the balls, then arrested. If he’d screw over tommy boy, he’s obviously not to be trusted…
BlueSunday - January 18, 2012 via mobile
No
I hope he does not retire….that man has one more job to do besides win some more Super Bowls with the Colts…he has to teach Andrew Luck how to be successful in the NFL….and show the kid just how it is done and what it takes to be as good as #18….
Colts53 - January 18, 2012
Rob Lowe sure has a pretty mouth
He should keep it shut.
Is that some foreign swear? lol
Nosewiper - January 19, 2012
I believe Rob Lowe and I'll tell you why
Aside from the facts that Peyton Manning is 36 and coming off of 3 neck surgeries in the past 19 months, his nerve damage that was supposed to heal in 2-3 months still hasn’t regenerated and Mr. Lowe really has no reason to make this up, this would explain a lot of the recent actions of the front office, including the handling of Jim Caldwell.
Jim Caldwell was, as it’s been described by radio pundits and bloggers alike, left hung out to dry when the Colts were decidedly mum on his status as HC here in Indy after the firing of the Polians and hiring of Ryan Grigson. I don’t think they were stringing him along at all – I think they were waiting on the results and health updates from Manning’s doctors before they made a decision on Caldwell. If the results come back positive, then you keep JC and maintain that continuity with the coaching staff for another run with Manning. If the results come back negative, you do exactly what we’e seen happen in the last 48 hours: fire the head coach and start cleaning house for a rebuilding project. 4 coaches have been canned since tuesday: Jim Caldwell, Pete Metzelaars (OL Coach), Frank Reich (WR Coach), and the DB coach.
I don’t believe a single word to come out of Tom Condon’s or Archie Manning’s mouths. It’s Condon’s job as an agent and Archie’s duty as a father to guard Manning’s image and the dissemination of information pertaining to him. I highly doubt Manning would want his retirement story broken by Mr. Robert Lowe of all people (thought that is kinda cool). And Jimmy Irsay didn’t exactly refute the story when given the chance, instead opting to reference a CIA informant “deep throat,” which I think, given his cryptic nature, lends more credence actually to Lowe’s assertion.
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Now the DL coach and Defensive Assistant coaches - John and Bill Teerlinck - have been terminated
along with the Strength and Conditioning coach.
The kind of continuity you want if 18’s returning, amirite?!
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Where do you see that?
kmbryant09 - January 19, 2012
Schefter tweeted it our about an hour or so ago about the teerlincks, the strength and conditioning coach was let go yesterday
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
I actually found out about the S & T coach from a Coltsider tweet
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
here's the schefter tweet
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Why would you keep a 2-14 coach but get rid fo the Polians?
Manning has said nothing about Caldwell at all.
Sure Manning and Condon could be lying but at least they respect Manning enough to let him tell it on his own(if its true) as opposed to Irsay and Lowe who are making a mockery of someone’s livelihood.
CF4L - January 19, 2012
I don't think that Irsay told Lowe to leak this
You get rid of the Polians b/c they strippd the cupboard down to the bare bones, and Caldwell dimply didn’t have the talent necessary to win. And they we pretty horrible with recent draft picks, particularly in the 1st round.
The only reason they would’ve kept caldwell is for the sake of Peyton and his not need to learn a new system with a brand new coach.
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
simply*
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Regardless its out there and I doubt Manning is pleased (if its true) that something this big was outed by some homemade porn star.
How insulting.
CF4L - January 19, 2012
I would agree that Manning (if this is true) is supremely pissed off
But, Lowe of course could simply be wrong. I think that you can connect the dots though, and all the information is there for this to make sense. Nobody (aside from Rob Lowe) is going to be willing to stick their name behind it until Manning or Irsay speak on the record, which, btw, hasn’t happened yet.
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Then Lowe should’ve kept his trap shut its just laughable for him to say he was stunned by the reaction.
You’re a celeb on twitter what did you think would happen?
You don’t think a private guy like Manning wouldn’t be upset if his possible retirement was outed by some actor rather than himself. Its his career after all.
CF4L - January 19, 2012
People make mistakes - I doubt that Lowe thought that this was going to get a fraction of the attention it ultimately did
But that’s the beauty of Twitter and The Social Media.
I just think that if this is true, it’s hilarious in a way b/c of how ESPN, FOX, NBC, CBS, NFL Network, etc., all got scooped by an actor. And it’s all because of twitter. Mort, Schefty, LaConfora and others like Peter King have been quick to provide ad hominem counters to Rob Lowe, but none of them can come up with anything other than hearsay to refute it. It’s actually pretty entertaining if you ask me.
BoilerUp1982 - January 19, 2012
Except he’s in the business and they all know how to get PR if they want it. That’s why they have publicists.
Regardless its hard to find this hilarious considering its Manning of all people. I know he wasn’t going to come back to the Cotls but I could’ve accepted him playing elsewhere because I liked watching him play.
To think that’s also not going to happen is very sad.
