Peyton Manning And The New York Jets?

"We can win a Super Bowl with Peyton."

"If you have a chance to get a healthy 36-year-old Peyton Manning and you don’t do it, then you’re stupid. If I could get a healthy 36-year-old Peyton Manning, then, hell yeah, I would trade Sanchez."

According to Manish Mehta's report in the New York Daily News, these words aren't from some random fan or cooky caller from a weekly Jets radio show.

These are strong words from within the organization.

More importantly, they are apparently straight from the mouth of "unnamed Jets players" and sources. While not all of Mehta's sources were critical of Sanchez, where does the passion to see #18 dawning the green and white come from?

Mark Sanchez and the lack of confidence surrounding him. Even with two AFC Championship appearances under his belt, Sanchez is continually feeling the heat of his costly in-game mistakes, along with the fact that he is apparently "lazy and content because he knows he's not going to be benched."

Star-divide

With the opportunity to go after Manning, should he be released, one of Sanchez's "well-respected" teammates pointed to the fact that Tom Moore -- one of Peyton's long-time offensive confidants -- could serve as a realistic talking point in negotiations:

"We already have his coach — Tom Moore. Plus, he’s a field general and will get everyone lined up. He will get his playmakers the ball."

The Moore-to-Manning connection certainly isn't farfetched. Manning was reportedly upset after Moore had been driven out of the Colts organization and rightfully so. The offensive relationship between the two had boomed as one of the most explosive systems in the league, for over a decade. If there were to be a front-runner in the very unlikely "Manning sweepstakes", it would seemingly be the Jets -- thanks to this relationship.

We also know that Rex Ryan loves Peyton Manning. With a Ryan-led defense and Manning-led offense, the things these two could do would be regarded as endless. And, as BBS cleverly mentioned in one of his latest articles, winning a second Super Bowl after switching teams isn't exactly easy. If Manning were to hook up with the Jets, all of the positive prospects of this team, and deliver another Super Bowl, he really would only further cement his calling as the greatest of all time.

Forget, Joe Namath. The people of New York would crown Manning as a God.

But even with the opportunity to rekindle that fire from the Colts glory years and more, would it be enough to convince Manning to sign with the Jets and all of the organizational hazards?

Not according to one of Mehta's sources.

"I don’t think that he’ll come here," a member of the Jets organization said. "We have to change the perception of our organization. We’re not the organization that players said they wanted to play for a year or two ago. We’re starting to come across a little flaky. We talk the talk. We don’t back it up. We’re out of control. There’s no discipline. It’s a mess right now."

Manning is undoubtedly one of professional sport's classiest athletes. That said, would pushing out a guy dubbed "San-chise", who also has the supposed undying confidence from his head coach, really be the most ideal situation for a Manning free agency transition?

Not exactly.

Sure, the NFL is a business. But the NFL is also a media machine. However you chalk it up, it could lead to some very good or very bad press for Manning, considering all of the drama and dysfunctional circumstances. Is that a risk he's willing to take?

And then there's also the fact that Peyton's brother basically plays across the street. With all of the "New York v. New York" and "This is our house!" brouhaha that has taken over the city, this could ultimately serve as another perpetual drama that Peyton just wouldn't be willing to take on.

Oh, and then there's this: Peyton Manning is STILL A FRIGGIN' COLT!

Even with the hiring of Ryan Grigson as the Colts new general manager, the decision on Manning's future is simple and totally up to Irsay, according to the man himself.

Come March 8th, If Manning is healthy, he stays. If Manning is hurt, he likely retires as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.

So, I wouldn't realistically entertain anyone's delusions of grandeur that involve Manning kicking our butts with weapons like Santonio "Locker Room Cancer" Holmes and Dustin Keller, while engulfed in green, just yet.

Plus, could you really live with seeing "Fireman Ed" doing the "J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!" chant before Manning takes the field?

Kill. Me. Now.

nice write up

but our gm is Ryan Grigson lol

LOL.

Whoops. Not sure why I put Eric. Thanks!

Hope he goes there and gets a 2nd ring!

The current Colts have no shot at a ring and would be lucky to get in the playoffs even if Manning is back to old from…

I personally think that in three years Andrew Luck will be a pro bowl caliber QB…

Them's fightin words

As much as I would love to see Manning get another ring with a horseshoe on his helmet, I know that’s not going to happen. However, if he does go somewhere else and do it, I’d accept it from almost any team other than the Jets.

Shoot me if he goes to the Jets.

You'll live.

Manning is not going to the Jets. Put the gun away.

PLEASE TELL ME......

that NOONE HERE WOULD ACTUALLY BELIEVE ANYTHING WRITTEN IN A RAG LIKE THE NY DAILY NEWS!!!! The National Enquierer has more credibility!!!! Was this article written next one about Beyonce naming her daughter Blue Ivy because she’s an ALIEN! Jeez….

correction...

National Enquier…duh

I heard a theory that one of Manish Mehta's unnamed sources

was forced-out OC Brian Shottenheimer, who was this year’s team scapegoat. If true, that would explain the attack on Sanchez.

couldn’t agree more. All these rumors don’t mean jack shit. Unless the COLTS release him he’s not going anywhere. I don’t see it happening….Irsay will keep him.

I’m still of the opinion if he’s healthy trade the number 1 and grab some good young talent this year and next. You would think that the team that trades up to get the number 1 would probably be in the Top 10 next year. Barkley, Tannenhill ( sp) and Jones could all be there. You could get one of them next year and pick up some good heal to rebuild over the next couple years.

No.

The QB’s you mentioned couldn’t carry Luck’s jock strap. When you are in a position to take a possible franchise QB, you take him. If Manning was only 30, then trade the pick. But Manning will be 36 and coming off of a major injury. To trade the pick and hope things work out down the road is playing with fire.

i meant some good help
Do the Jets even have the cap space to even sign Manning?
Lets look at where this came from

The Jets (players, coach….) talk more smack than anyone. I think it’s well known this is B.S. Read the first few lines of this article and that’s plenty, thanks.

Manning will retire a Colt

Wheter it is this year or in the future… write down my words…

I come from New Jersey and there's nothing worse than Jets fans after 2 straight AFC Championship games

But hell, if you get Manning, we’ll just take your entire 2012 draft class.

:D

There is more a comment about Sanchez and the Jets QB situation

Than anything that will happen with Manning.

Good point.

It really speaks volumes about the dysfunction within the organization. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if these quotes from the “well-respected” Jets player didn’t come from Tomlinson.

Tomlinson...

is probably regretting his decision to join the Jets. Must have been hard for a professional like him to put up with all the side shows that go in there…

NY Daily News is a supermarket rag...

The Jets are toxic. The team is a mess. PM would never go there. Good points were made in this article. The Jets are just a bunch of classless clowns, starting with their joker of a coach.

NY Daily News

is definitely a tabloid: sensational stories, outlandish headlines, girls in bikinis, etc. But their sports coverage is actually very good and usually pretty reliable. They have good writers like Mike Lupica and Gary Myers. Over the years I’ve read papers in Indy, Boston, San Francisco, and St. Louis to name a few, and the Daily News is among the best sports coverage I’ve seen.

That said, you are absolutely correct that the Jets are classless clowns, and Ryan is the head jackass.

And to be clear

I’m not saying Peyton is going to the Jets; I don’t think he is. But I’m sure many Jets would want him there, and that they told the reporter as much.

True.

Couldn’t agree more. Rex Ryan is a buffoon and the Jets franchise is a joke. To hell with them.

As far as NY is concerned

Most Giants fans I’ve spoken to seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that there’s an AFC team in NY. I don’t think the Giants Eli Vs. Jets’ Peyton would keep him out. If anything it would encourage the Jets to petition hard to get Peyton to shut G-men up.

Just my NY perspective.

This is such a non-story...

I was on Sirius with Adam and Rich this morning talking about this very subject. Adam assured me there is nothing to this. Adam Schefter had already confirmed it as well. In fact, while we were on the phone they hired Tony Sparano as their o.c.

Manning to the Jets made sense because of the Tom Moore connection. If Tom Moore had been made o.c. I would have found Manish Mehta’s article much more belivable.

As it stands, it’s just a bunch of unnamed sources “up and down the organization”. Um, yeah, okay. When Derrick Mason comes out on the record and says the Jets are a mess that carries weight. Otherwise, who knows what was said to this reporter. Maybe L.T. said he wants Manning or one of the trainers said, in a joking manner, “Yeah, that Sanchez, man is he lazy. No seriously, he works his butt off. He’s not the problem.”

You know what this story really did? It got Manish Mehta, and the New York Daily News a lot of publicity.

Another thing, all of this talk about Manning going anywhere is moot until a.) He’s medically cleared to play. b.) Tom Condon then gets an offer from another team that’s a H.O.F. QB away from a championship. c.) Manning could then easily force Irsay to cut him by not renegotiating his deal. The salary cap ramifications for the Colts would be pretty onerous otherwise. d.) Manning isn’t cleared to play, and Irsay cuts him. e.) Manning might retire, or he might pass another teams physical in another month.

Look at all the permutations above, and there’s even more I could come up with. That’s why the Manning to the Jets is such a non-story.

Two things that are much more interesting: 1.) Manning has a slight edge if he wants out of Indy because of the way the contract is structured. 2.) The number of reporters, commentators, etc that keep talking about Manning and Irsay pushing back the bonus money deadline. You would think that maybe someone might have picked up on the fact that under the new C.B.A. neither party can do that.

heres my point

peopel keep saying we catn keep Mannig cuz teh 28 millionwil crippel us next year cap wise

Weel, who teh fuck cares?

if we get rid of him for Luck, we wont be winning sh* t next season with Luck as our QB anyways!

We ALREADY saw how this team, as currently constructed, played without him. Next year with Luck and same team, actually it wil be less as Reggie Wayne, Brackett and potentially Saturday or Mathis may be let go, we may only get around 5 wins, no matter who we pick-up if we dive into FA

Yes they will suck next year...

But by 2014 if they hit in this draft and the 13 draft they should be set up for a long run of excellence.

then why keep him?

for everybody that thinks luck will suck and they compare him to jamarcus russell or ryan leaf, what about cam newton or andy daulton? this is an exciting time to be a colts fan but people want to hold on to manning like he is a god. keeping him makes zero sense! with all the FA on this roster and the guys with bloated contracts, there is no hope of winning anything any time soon. if u r just a PM fan, why wouldn’t u want to see him on a team with a chance to win the SB. i would personally love to see him on the jets. he would go up against Bill Bill-a-cheat and the pretty boy twice a year, and he would actually have a team behind him. it would send his legacy into the stratosphere!

Luck won't suck

Luck is not the lazy bastard that Russell is/was and he is not the head case Leaf is/was. I agree with your post for the most part. I would like Manning to go to the 49ers and win another SB or 2 while the Colts reload with Luck. Manning will always be one of my favorite players and I would rather see him playing for Harbaugh than that buffoon Rex Ryan.

adam schein is a fruitin moron
Stew Blake...

BBS, Is that you?!

It is a non-story, but

Isn’t it worth it to see the Rexy and the the Jets becoming a total mess???

after some expert analysis and real research

I simulated the trade in Madden 12 and he ironically went to Baltimore. DUN DUN DUN!!!!

LOL - On the fireman fred comment!

God I get tired of seeing that a-hole on TV when the Jets are on the tube. If I sat in the stands near that guy, I’d think I would have to send him over the rail.

Ditto – Kill Me Now. LOL.

If Colts trade Peyton to them

they better be getting Revis and a few others back in return!!!!!

Irsay has already stated that Peyton will not be traded.

I cant stand "Fireman Ed"

Let alone the thought of PM leaving here for there

PM leaving would be painful for all!!!!
I hope Manning retires

If he’s not healthy. I just cannot see him playing for another team. I would name him qbs coach right away to teach Luck and he’ll eventually become head coach or OC. Imagine: best qb and coach of all time… Legen-wait for it-dary!

Jesus

MANNING IS NOT A COACH. Has he ever once said he had any desire to be a coach? Nobody retires and becomes with a bazillion $ and becomes a fucking QB coach. Or for that matter any level of coach.

What he said ^^^^

Manning is a top 3 QB ever. The other superlatives about what he can do after FB…OC HC GM league commissioner POTUS And Jesus Christ are pretty stupid. Coaches work 16-20 hrs a day for a fraction of what Manning currently makes…He has no executive or draft experience.

The guy is wealthy and has young children are fans really on his nuts that hard that you want to see him as a coach? Peyton Manning is pur gridiron heron but he is not God Colts fans. If you cut him he bleeds like me and you. He gets the flu, can’t walk on water or make rain fall from the sky…

He will end up at ESPN Or NBC and will be a great announcer or studio guy…or he will just live his life and count his zillions and do charity work!

While I rather have him stay with the Colts I know how unrealistic that is. As long as he doesn’t a decision special I’m fine with him going elsewhere to finish his career. Its his career after all.

Don't like this post

its a non-issue and spun off of opinion of the jets players being asked a hypothetical question… Still, guess its good fodder for the blog

Well it's a big story

but for the Jets, not so much for us. Reading some of the comments above it seems to me that some are kind of blurring the line between what the reporter actually reported (that some in the Jets organization want Peyton) and what may actually happen. Right now it’s obviously all speculation. But it’s a pretty big deal when members of an organization that has been to the last two AFCCGs and play in the biggest media market in the country publicly throw their young QB under the bus. It’s just that it’s a big deal for the Jets, and not so much for us.

Manning/Brady hype 2-3 times a year?

No thanks!

Donning not dawning

…that is all

Manning and The colts

I believe Manning will stay with the Colts. If the Colts take Luck as the first round pick and Manning does not redo his contract it will be tough to hold onto free agents and build the defense. the Colts need a lot and with Manning and Luck there is not a lot of room. It would however be great to have Luck learn under Manning.

I'm not really sure how

many times Irsay has to say it publicly….but if Manning is healthy, he will be back. And the Colts will also draft Luck.

Irsay and Polian had both said with the new CBA that it was entirely possible to be able to afford 2 QBs. Manning counts I believe $16M against the cap. Luck’s deal would probably count $4M or so. That’s $20M tied up in QBs. Not ideal, but certainly not the impossibilty that you all make it out to be. Particularly when we know that a lot of veteran contracts are going to be dropping off, and are going to be replaced with younger players.

Irsay had faith in Polian too..but now

He said all that stuff before we had the 1st pick locked up, it is possible he has re-evaluated his position.
