According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who got into a Twitter war last week with Owner Jim Irsay, the Colts and Irsay are all set to hire Eagles Director of Player Personnel Ryan Grigson as the Colts new General Manager:
Colts and @JimIrsay plan to hire Eagles director of player personnel Ryan Grigson as their new general manager. Lawyers finalizing agreement
Irsay had said previously that he wanted to hire his new GM by the middle of this week, and that certainly seems to be the case here.
Grigson has been with the Eagles for nine seasons, starting out as a scout, than moving up to Director of College Scouting, which was his position for four seasons. Before the 2010 season he was promoted again to the Director of Player Personnel, which is essentially second-in-command to the General Manager. Pretty much every other candidate for the GM position held the same title.
Grigson also has ties to the area, as he was born in Highland, IN, and was a Tight End/Offensive Tackle at Purdue from 1991-94. His NFL career really didn't take off, failing to play in any games, and suffered a career-ending back injury while playing in Canada in 1997.
Once this becomes official we'll have a lot more information. Obviously he'll have a big decision to make right away with Head Coach Jim Caldwell on whether he stays or not. Stay tuned.

I understand the Indiana connection and all, and I hope Grigson does well.
But after seeing the debacle in the Philadelphia organization this past season, it would seem that pulling someone from their front office isn’t the best choice. I hope I’m wrong.

I would blame the GM and the DC
Also, Vick is fragile and last season was an aberration for him.
Ty46 - January 11, 2012
I agree with that, especially the DC. But, as the Director of Player Personnel, he should be culpable, too.
Again, I hope Grigson does well. It just seems there were better candidates out there. I guess I still just wish we were able to steal DeCosta from the Ravens.

Ryan Grigson
The man who gets to help decide the fate of 18. Welcome to the team.

Nah...
the fate of #18 is in the hands of his health and Jim Irsay; I don’t think the GM will have a choice in making that call.

+1

It's a good choice.
(and after watching McKenzie start out in Oakland, I’m glad it’s not him. Looks like a man, that is not very bright and was only along the ride in GB.)
Ty46 - January 11, 2012
why? hue jackson did what exactly?
and listening to jackson interviews seemed as though he wanted more power than just hc…

Reid
Hey how close is this guy with Andy Reid? I will take him as coach in a heartbeat… There was some thought of ousting him this year in Philly…
Let me officially start that rumor…lol… Reid comes with Grigson…LOL…
AJ Colt - January 11, 2012
No thanks
Why do people believe he is good?
Ty46 - January 11, 2012
Uh… could be the multiple, multiple years of playoffs(Championship games) and an SB ….LOL…
AJ Colt - January 11, 2012
Caldwell has 66% playoff ratio and 33% SB ratio
Ty46 - January 11, 2012
So you are going to correllate Caldwell’s 2 years …to Andy Reid multiple, multiple years of success…. uh ok… it’s like saying Sanchez > P.Manning because he has gong to the AFC Championship 2 out 3 years…way better percentage… LOL….
AJ Colt - January 11, 2012
3 years, and I'm showing, that stats not always matter
Could have brought up Dungy too. Overrated, average coach with lots of playoff years.
Ty46 - January 11, 2012
Favorite Reid quote
“That was a gut-wrenching game, and I have a lot of gut to wrench”
Jim"TimeOut"Caldwell - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, I think between Reid and Tom Coughlin...
It seems like the fans in Philly and New York want to fire both them every year.
Mapanator - January 11, 2012
could you imagine
an offensive guru like Andy Reid with Peyton Manning? The results could be sickening.
Heck think of it with Andrew Luck. Reid has made terrible QB’s (Donvan McNabb, Kevin Kolb) look pretty fantastic and has taken Michael Vick to another level. I think he’s really good at using a QB’s strengths and hiding weaknesses.
coltsfanbeforemanning - January 11, 2012
Dionovan McNabb terrible?
What the hell are you talking about? He was quite good in his prime, not all thanks to Andy Reid.
Coltsfan1345 - January 11, 2012
Eagles
were arguably the most talented team in the NFL this year. I am surprised at some of your reactions.
GrizzColt - January 11, 2012
I agree that team was talented individually.
But it seemed to be built with a bunch of independent parts, rather than as a unit.
Mapanator - January 11, 2012
I'll take the optimistic approach
I’d rather he be involved in a failure like that somewhere else so he doesn’t make the same mistake in Indianapolis.
I doubt we’ll see a ‘dream team’ via free agency.
mgrex03 - January 11, 2012
Dream team via free agency..
talk about the polar opposite of the Colts’ past philosophy.
Ayrshire - January 11, 2012
ahem, Ayrshire, I guess you were, cough, right.
I’m all ears if you wanna say “I told you so” over the Polian situation.
I’ll face the music, take my medicine, pay the piper, etc.
zherebyonki - January 11, 2012
I'm not one to rub it in.
I always said Polian seemed to do a good job in the first half of his career in Indy. The second half is where things broke down with me,….as you know….. with the deliberate tanking of a streak which could have attained a place in the history books, and of course, placing the employment of his son over the best interest of the Colts. Anyway, it’s behind us now. I look forward to seeing what the new GM is going to do.
Ayrshire - January 11, 2012
thanks for letting me off easy. Onwards!
zherebyonki - January 11, 2012
Not having a team mentality,
although you could contribute it to picking players that aren’t cohesive, is something that i would more so attribute to a failure in the coach bringing his team together and making them a cohesive unit, as opposed to the actual players themselves.
Sir Sci - January 11, 2012
Who?
Well, Irsay did say it would be someone new – someone who was not a big name.
Seems to be highly regarded in the league so good luck to him.
Guy LeDouche - January 11, 2012
So I think a good sign of control is if Caldwell is fired… If Caldwell isn’t fired I will think this guy is just a figure head so Irsay can pull the strings…
Just put yourself in this guys shoes… You get this dream job and you’re going to pin your hopes on a guy who isn’t your guy… and a guy coming off a 2-14 season….
Caldwell’s status will tell us all we need to know about the new front office….
AJ Colt - January 11, 2012
Let's also not forget
a guy who has shown he doesn’t know how to make basic in-game adjustments and doesn’t have the first clue of time-management/time-out use. Yeah,….that’s the ticket. Sign me up for more of him.
Ayrshire - January 11, 2012
He will probably bring in a new coach rumor mill says
Rumor mill says that he will bring in Marty Mornhinweg as the new coach. He is the Eagles current OC and assistant coach. Supposed to be a west coast offense guru. He had a bad record as HC with the Lions, but that was 10 years ago. Some say he was too young and not ready to be a HC back then. Have to wait and see what new GM says, but Irsay said new GM will decide Caldwell’s fate.
Radcolt - January 11, 2012
sure, why not? Orlovsky was 10,000% more successful in Indy, why not Marty?
zherebyonki - January 11, 2012
Different head coach for the 0-16 Lions...
Marty was just as bad having only 5 wins, but remember Matt Millan was the GM.
Radcolt - January 11, 2012
From Wikipedia
“The most notable moment in Mornhinweg’s history as a head coach came during a 2002 game against the Chicago Bears. The game went into overtime, and the Lions won the toss. However, Mornhinweg felt that having the wind in his favor was more important than getting the ball, despite having as his kicker Jason Hanson, who hit a then-NCAA record 62-yard field goal in his college days at Washington State University. He elected to kick rather than receive. As it turned out, the Lions never got the ball; on the Bears opening drive, Chicago scored a field goal to win the game. The decision prompted fed-up Lions fans to refer to the coach as “Marty Moron-weg”. Mornhinweg’s decision was that season’s runner-up for the Terry Award to Dwayne Rudd’s premature helmet toss celebration that cost his Cleveland Browns a victory."

Still though, he seems like a very good offensive mind. I would be just fine with the hiring, though it does seem like he has some strange strategies/antics (the only time I’ve ever seen someone kick to start in OT).
Coltsfan1345 - January 11, 2012
In Tampa Bay,
during the Ray Perkins era, Ray did the same thing. Won the toss, and elected to kick. What an idiot. People that stupid have no business coaching.
